School education in Mexico
In Mexico, the school admission process typically follows the same general structure, with specific ages and cut-off dates for each education level. The school year in Mexico generally starts in late August or early September and ends in late June or early July.
In Mexico, basic education is normally divided into three steps:
- Primary school (primaria), comprising grades 1–6;
- Junior high school (secundaria), comprising grades 7-9; and
- High school (preparatoria), comprising grades 10-12.
Pre-school (Preescolar)
Cut-off date for admission: Generally, children must be 3 years old by December 31st of the year they start school.
- Age Group: 3 to 5 years old
- Levels:
- Pre-kinder (for children who turn 3 during the school year)
- Kinder (for children who turn 4)
- Preparatoria (for children who turn 5)
Primary School (Primaria)
Cut-off date for admission: Children generally must be 6 years old by December 31st of the year they enter 1st grade. For example, a child born in 2018 would start 1st grade in 2024 if they turn 6 years old by December 31st.
- Age Group: 6 to 12 years old
- Grades: 1st to 6th grade
Secondary School (Secundaria)
Cut-off date for admission: Children are typically expected to be 12 years old by December 31st to enter 1st year of secondary school (7th grade).
- Age Group: 12 to 15 years old
- Grades: 7th to 9th grade
High School (Preparatoria or Bachillerato)
Cut-off date for admission: Students generally need to be 15 years old by December 31st to enter the first year of high school (10th grade).
- Age Group: 15 to 18 years old
- Grades: 10th to 12th grade
