Education System in India
An Overview
The school system in India has four levels:
- Primary - Class 1 to Class 5 - Age 6 to 10
- Middle School - Class 6 to Class 8 - Age 11 and 12
- Secondary school - Class 9 to Class 10 - Age 13 to 15
- Senior secondary school - Class 11 to Class 12 - Ages 17 and 18
The age of entry is different in each state in some states minimum age to enter class 1 is 5 years while in some other states its 6 years. The school years in India commonly March or April however some areas the school year starts as late as June/July.
Age Criteria for Admission in India
All states and UTs in India have been directed by the center to align their Class I admission age with guidelines of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, to age six plus years, to bring about uniformity throughout the country.
What is National Education Policy (NEP) 2020?
Under the NEP 2020 5+3+3+4 education system, students will spend 5 years in the foundational stage, following 3 years under the preparatory stage, 3 years of learning in the middle stage, and finally 4 years in the secondary stage
