How do you find the simplest fraction? Simplifying or reducing a fraction means to make the fraction as simple as possible.
For example, 1/4 and 20/80 both are equivalent but 1/4 is a simplified form of 20/80 or is derived by reducing the fraction 20/80
How to Simplify Fractions?
Simplification can be done for the following number types:
- Improper fractions where the numerator is greater than the denominator
- A simple fraction in which the numerator and denominator both have at least one common factor.
In the first case, the fraction would be simplified by converting it into a mixed number.
In the second case, the fraction would be reduced to its lowest form by dividing the numerator and denominator both by their Greatest Common Factor (GCF)/ highest common factor (HCF).
How to simplify Improper Fractions?
Improper Fraction is any fraction where the numerator is greater than the denominator. In order to convert an improper fraction into a mixed number, we will have to divide the Numerator with the Denominator.
A mixed number consists of a whole number and a fraction together In this case, the quotient will be the whole number, the remainder will be the numerator and the divisor will be the denominator of the fraction.
For Example, to convert 171/18 into a mixed number, we will divide 171 by 18. This will give us Quotient as 9, Remainder as 9 and divisor as 18.
The mixed number will be 9 9/18 i.e. 171/18 = 9 9/18 in simplest form
How do you simplify a fraction step by step?
How to reduce a fraction to its lowest form? In order to convert a fraction into its lowest form,
- Write all the factors of numerator and denominator
- We will have to find the Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of numerator and denominator and then
- Divide both the numerator and denominator with that GCF.
For Example, to simplify fraction 9/72,
- we will find factors for both numerator 9 and denominator 72.
- Factors of 9 = 3,9 Factors of 72 = 2,3,4,6,8,9
- The greatest common factor between 9 and 72 is 9.
- We will divide both 9 and 72 by 9 and get 1/8 as the simplified form.
- So, Fraction 9/72 = 1/8 in simplest form
