Government Decision on Schools and Colleges
Despite a statewide bandh called by pro-Kannada organizations, the Karnataka state government has announced that schools and colleges will remain open on Saturday, March 22, 2025. The bandh is scheduled to take place from 6 AM to 6 PM.
Deputy Commissioner of Bengaluru, Jagadeesha G, confirmed on Friday that educational institutions in the city will function as usual. The Associated Managements of Primary and Secondary Schools of Karnataka (KAMS) has extended moral support to the protest but emphasized that ongoing examinations should not be disrupted.
Impact on Examinations
KAMS officials expressed concerns that any interruption could affect students and staff, as several important exams are currently underway:
- SSLC (Secondary School Leaving Certificate) exams began on Friday.
- CBSE and ISC board exams are scheduled for Saturday.
Public Transport and Other Services
- KSRTC & BMTC Buses: Employee associations have expressed solidarity with the bandh but have assured that services will continue as usual.
- Ola, Uber & Auto-Rickshaws: Several driver unions supporting the bandh may result in limited availability of cab and auto-rickshaw services.
- Hotels & Film Industry: While these industries have extended moral support, they plan to operate as usual.
Reason for the Bandh and Protest Demands
The bandh has been called to protest the alleged assault on a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus conductor in Belagavi for not speaking Marathi. The protest organizers are demanding:
- A ban on pro-Marathi groups and Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES), accusing them of inciting violence.
- Protection of Kannada-speaking individuals' rights, particularly in border areas like Belagavi.
Conclusion
Despite the bandh, the government remains firm on keeping educational institutions open to prevent disruptions. Students, parents, and staff are advised to stay updated on travel conditions and plan accordingly.
