Yessss, working with homemade clay is a fun thing to do for a child. You can make No-Bake Craft Clay. You won't have to worry if small children are easy to put objects in their mouths as it is all-natural and consists of cornstarch and baking soda mixed with water. You'll need 1 cup cornstarch, 1/4 cup cold water, 2 cups baking soda (1 pound), Pan, Food Color (optional), Plate, Moist cloth, Tempera or acrylic paint (optional), Shellac paint, acrylic paint or clear nail polish. And here is the recipe that I do:
1. Put the cornmeal, water, and baking soda in the pot; Stir over medium heat for about 4 minutes until the mixture thickens into a moist mashed potato. (For colored clay, add a few drops of food coloring to the water before mixing with the cornstarch and baking soda.)
2. Remove from heat, place on a plate, and cover with a damp cloth until cool.
3. Knead the DIY mixture until smooth.
4. Shape as desired or store in an airtight container, plastic wrap, or Ziploc bag.
5. Dry the sculpture overnight, then paint with tempera or acrylic paint.
6. Seal with shellac paint, polish, acrylic spray, or nail polish.
